Solana Activates Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade at Slot 459,653,000
Solana's transition from TowerBFT to the Alpenglow consensus mechanism introduces faster finality targets following a scheduled brief transaction pause.
Solana's network upgrade to the Alpenglow consensus mechanism is scheduled to activate at slot 459,653,000 during epoch 1064 on Wednesday, October 21. According to official Solana documentation and client developer Anza, the transition occurs roughly 5,000 slots into the epoch, estimated around 14:00 UTC.
The switchover includes an intentional pause of roughly two slots, or about 400 milliseconds, during which blocks process only validator votes rather than user transactions. Solana Compass noted that slight variations in average slot speed could shift the precise timing by several minutes.
The report clarifies that slot times had already been reduced to approximately 200 milliseconds in an earlier update. Alpenglow specifically addresses finality, targeting an estimated 150 milliseconds compared to the 12.8-second threshold required under the previous TowerBFT framework.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
